CORE FUNCTIONS of center Data Services

Enterprise Reporting (Canned Reports)

The Center For Excellence (CFE) creates and maintains reports that are used department-wide in which the need for accuracy, consistency and governance outweighs the need for agility or complexity.

Data Curation

The CFE identifies, determines the fitness of, potential uses for, access methods and costs of external datasets. This includes an awareness and communication of open and proprietary data that could prove valuable information in identifying market trends or leading indicators. Please notify our team if you know of an existing or missing data set that could be helpful.

Information Asset Directory

The CFE maintains a directory of available information assets, including metadata sufficient to describe the business meaning, format, source, acceptable usage, privacy/security features, quality characteristics, alternatives and linked data. We focus on data sources that offer multiple analytic uses throughout the state.

App Library

The CFE maintains a function/application library of reusable analytic components (e.g., algorithms, data gathering tools, predictive models, pattern detection, metrics). This is a repository of useful Google Apps, Excel tricks, filters and dashboards that can be applied to existing data to save users time in developing their own. Some of these tools are available to interested parties to be utilized as needed.

Governance

The CFE is responsible for overseeing the quality and integrity of the Department of Human Resource Management (DHRM) data. However, each DHRM staff member plays an integral role in ensuring that data is both created and applied in impeccable ways. The CFE establishes analytic governance precepts (i.e., principles, guidelines, policies, standards and procedures). While another role is to monitor usage of DHRM data in self-service environments to ensure data is being used appropriately.

Technology Capabilities

Finally, the CFE manages existing and stays abreast of upcoming developments in technology-related aspects of high-performance analytics capabilities. Some of these core capabilities reside within the Department of Technological Services (DTS), in which case the CFE coordinates, rather than administers. The technology capabilities are:

  • Server and hosting infrastructure

  • Software applications

  • Remote (cloud) data storage

  • Remote (cloud) application hosting

  • Application integration
